Makerere ranked 18th in Africa, Ndejje 42nd. In the new rankings, Makerere comes after Cape Peninsula University of Technology from South Africa.

Makerere University has been ranked the 18th best performing and reputable university among the 200 best universities in Africa, as per the new 4iCU.org university web rankings. However, this indicates that Makerere University has dropped by 14 positions from the third position, as ranked by Times Higher Education World University Rankings early this year, last year. In the new rankings, Makerere comes after Cape Peninsula University of Technology from South Africa. According to the rankings, Uganda’s Ndejje University was ranked 42nd, Mbarara University of Science and Technology 73rd while Uganda Christian University was also positioned in the 91st position.

This means that Ndejje becomes the Second Best University in the country and highly ranked private university in the country. South African Universities took the first 10 positions. They include; University of Cape Town in the 1st position, University of South Africa 2nd, Univeristy of Pretoria 3rd, Universities Stellenbosch 4th, University of the Witwatersrand 5th, North-West University 6th, University of KwaZulu-Natal 7th, Rhodes University 8th, University of Johannesburg 9th and University of the Western Cape ranked in the 10th position.

Early this year, the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) ranked Makerere at the 846th position from 869th position in 2015, out of the 1,000 universities in the global rankings. CWRUR measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions in addition to providing authoritative global university and provision of consulting services to governments and educational institutions who aspire to achieve world-class standards.

According to the CWUR, Makerere ranks seventh on African continent and remains the best outside South Africa and Egypt. CWUR ranked the University of Witwatersrand from South Africa as Africa’s finest at 176th position the world; University of Cape Town second at 265th; Stellenbosch University third at 329th; University of KwaZulu-Natal fourth at 468th; University of Pretoria fifth at 697th position while Egypt’s Cairo University comes in at number six in Africa and 771stout of the top 1,000.

Egypt’s Ain Shams University at 960th; Mansoura University at 985th; and Alexandria University at 995th complete Africa’s top ten and the continent’s only universities in the top 1,000. A total of 224 Universities among the top 1,000 are from the US while 90 are from China, 74 from Japan, 65 from the United Kingdom, 56 from Germany, 48 from France, 48 from Italy, 41 from Spain, 36 from South Korea, 32 from Canada, 27 from Australia and Africa as a continent has only 10, South Africa dominating with 6, Egypt 3 and Uganda with only 1. In 2015, Thompson Reuter Corporation ranked Makerere in the ninth position, South Africa taking the first six universities with the University of Cape town in the first place, followed by the University of Witwatersrand, University of Stellenbosch taking the third, University of Pretoria the fourth, University of Kwazul-Natal the fifth, and lastly the University of Johannesburg. Egypt had the seventh and eighth rankings being the University of Cairo and Ain Shams University respectively
