Today May 10, 2022 General Secretary of National Council of Sports has paid a visit to Ndejje University Main Campus. The main purpose of the visit is to get an update on the progress of the preparations for the 2022 Eastern Africa University Games. Dr. Ogwel was flanked by Mr. Gunter Lange the Presidential Advisor to His Excellency on Sport and Education.
During the same visit, the University did unveil to the General Secretary the Female Volleyball Team (Ndejje Elites) that won the National Volleyball League and the Female Handball Team that won the National Handball league.
Dr. Ogwel was welcomed by the Vice Chancellor of Ndejje University, Prof. Eriabu Lugujjo in presence of the University Secretary Mr. Elijah Kiyingi and the Finance Manager Paul Mark Kayongo.
Prof. Lugujjo welcomed him to the university and presented to him the progress on the preparation of the Eastern Africa University Games. Ndejje University won the bid to host the 2022 Eastern Africa University Games that were meant to have happen in 2020 but couldn’t take place due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.
Ndejje University need 8.5 Million US Dollars to upgrade the sport facilities, an offer the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni already made when the Team from Ndejje University visited him at state House in April.
The University also needs approximately 1.5 Million US Dollars (approx. UGX 5.7 Billion) to successfully host the Games looking at the number of participants that will be involved. This budget is mainly to cover operational costs of the games such as repairs and maintenance, welfare of the participants, Publicity of the Games, technical expenses among others.
In his remarks, Dr. Ogwel appreciated the efforts of Ndejje University in supporting the development of sports in the country. He noted the great input of the university having over 16 teams in 16 top flight leagues of the different sports in the country.
He assured the university that the pledge of H.E the President will be followed up by his office as National Council of Sports and ensure it is met. He also pledged to make a contribution to the successful hosting of the Eastern Africa University Games.
For the case of the Ndejje University Volleyball Team, Dr. Ogwel promised to work with the University to see how he can support the team’s travel to Tunisia for the Africa Volleyball Club Championships. Ndejje University Volleyball Team will be traveling to Tunis as Uganda’s representative at the Africa Volleyball Championships.
